Ruth E. Johnson joined the staff of Meharry Medical College in 2005 and has been serving as Associate Vice-President for Advancement since November 2006. Ms. Johnson began her career as an attorney specializing in estate tax with Internal Revenue Service from 1975 to 1979. Her career includes work as a supervisor at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. and Touche Ross & Co.; as a Title III coordinator at Fisk University and later as an adjunct professor in the Business Division; as an affiliate broker for Broker South Real Estate; and as an attorney in private practice.
Ms. Johnson served Governor Don Sundquist as Commissioner of Revenue from 1995 to 2003. She is a graduate of St. Bernard Academy in Nashville, TN, received her Bachelor of Science degree with honors from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and law degree from the Vanderbilt School of Law.
On March 26th, 2012, Mayor Karl Dean announced Ruth E. Johnson as the recipient of the 2012 Nashville ATHENA Award during a gala celebration at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
